Getting a Better Mix
A few basics that make the difference between a strong pour and a cracked one.
Get Your Ratio Right
A standard general-purpose mix is roughly 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 3 parts aggregate — measure by volume, not by eye, for consistent strength.
Don't Add Too Much Water
Excess water weakens the final strength of the concrete, even though it makes mixing easier — add gradually and stop as soon as it's workable.
Keep It Damp While Curing
Cover fresh concrete with plastic sheeting or damp burlap for the first few days — curing too fast in the sun leads to surface cracking.
Store Bags Off the Ground
Keep unused bags on a pallet and away from moisture — cement absorbs humidity easily and will harden inside the bag if stored poorly.
